Sell Those Books!

Today I visited two health food stores, thinking they would attract just the kind of clientele that might be interested in this book. One was rather unwelcoming, but the other was very positive. I think I've got a real chance to market the book locally in all the stores of this second place!
Still, it feels kind of odd going into what is fundamentally a glorified grocery store and suggesting they buy my book. How sad it is that there are so few bookstores that this is the only sort of place that might sell it!

I hope so Marly. Ebooks are okay with me, but this book is a lovely looking object, especially now that Karen made the pages cream colored rather than white!

I had one of my children's books in a toy store that didn't carry books once--can't really remember seeing any other alternative venues, but if they work, go for it.

I agree with that. It seems it's nearly impossible to sell poetry folks on things. Having an angle outside of strictly literary venues is the best way to sell a book, I think.
But I really need to get a reading or two somewhere!

Go to open mike nights, take your books? Dunno.

Karen was impressed with your Whole Foods coup. Not knowing anything about marketing and having nerve are two great things.

I had to give up trying to sell the books myself. I had called B&N small press office in NY, and thought about filing an application for them to carry the book nationwide, but I can't possibly sell it as cheaply as I would need to for them to sell it. I am having this problem everywhere I go.
So I let her do it because she is already selling her sweets at Whole Foods and has a contract with them.
Now she recommended that I contact companies that make gift baskets about putting the book into some of them, for Easter, perhaps.
I sent emails to these places, but I don't think I'll ever hear from them. It's a cool idea, but too novel for most of these guys, probably.

Look at catalogues that carry yoga gear and clothing.

The problem is Marly that I cannot price the books favorably enough for outfits like that or even bookstores to make anything. It doesn't do me much good if I just give all my leads to Karen. I'm glad she can make some money from the book, and of course I get some exposure, but I need money myself at this point.
