Starting Again

In addition to buying the cat tree, I have been thinking about getting some decent furniture, a piece at a time, for the house. We have never spent money on this sort of thing, mostly because our lives have been lived in apartments, temporary places. But we have stayed in this apartment for 8 years now, and it is time, even if we aren't going to buy a house or condo after all, to treat the place as something a bit more permanent. So I am looking for a queen size storage bed. The idea is to keep the cats out of the box spring because there won't be one, and the room will look better. Plus, there will be more storage, which we can always use. Eventually, I'll buy decent bureaus and maybe a few chairs. Eventually, I want a new and different couch. I never liked the futon we have in the living room. I only bought it because it was relatively light weight and easy to move.
Again, Richard doesn't like this idea. He doesn't want to put things together, he says, and doesn't want to spend money on this sort of thing. But I am willing to buy this stuff myself, and have it delivered. Under those circumstances, he says, he will put it together. I hope that it will inspire me to neaten up a bit and will make it easier for me to do this.

Great! Robbi. I live in a two bedroom apt. And decided last year to make the best of it. The enire apt was painted, with accent walls. I have bought,or inherited great furniture from friends :)
Be sure, to have the carpet deep cleaned. It makes a huge difference. I also, have spent the last several weeks, doing away with stuff I have not used in years. I delivered 12 sets of twin sheets to my sister today. If, you needs ideas, I would love to come over and help you. I am pretty good at furniture design and decorating. Do not let your husband or son stop you from making your home nice and cozy. You deserve to have new furnishings in your home piece by piece. YOU GO GIRL!

Beth,
Thanks for the encouragement. I don't have all that much money, and no friends are offering the furniture,so I don't know if decorating ideas will be practical. I know what kind of bed I want, generally speaking; it's just I don't want to pay as much as I see them going for. I'd like a real wooden storage bed, but I can't pay $900-$1000. and up for it. Composite may be the best I can do.
The chairs, etc. may be something I can find more readily than the bed.
I think the carpet is beyond being salvaged by shampooing. It needs to be replaced. Perhaps moving is the best thing we can do.

Humm! You have a nice size living room :) Have you tried Craigs List for stuff? Have you asked your landlord, for a carpet cleaning and new paint? You should ask. They may, replace the carpet and should, for sure paint. That is a start.

Two years ago the landlord offered to change the carpet, and I wanted to take her up on it. But Richard said he didn't want to move all the books. We had no time to take them off and put them back on the shelves, he said. So I turned down the offer, sadly. She never offered to paint. She has tried instead to get us to move out by refusing to pay for a new washer and dryer when they broke until we offered to pay half. That's why we have stayed here...to make that half pay.
The only way to get a better place is to move. I'd leave now, if Richard would agree to it.
$600. for a room full of furniture sounds good. I should look at it, but I suspect the quality is not what I'd like. Craig's list has has nothing right now. I checked.
Also, I'd have to hire someone to get the stuff here. Buying from Ikea might be the best I can do.
